New Mexico's Quirky and Creative Community
About two hours north of Santa Fe in the upper reaches of New Mexico is the singular town of Taos. This outpost of about 6,000 residents is many things at once. It is an artists’ colony, a winter sports resort and a venerable community, making Taos a unique and interesting place to visit. Attracted to the relaxing atmosphere and clean air, guests come for the native traditions, amazing art and the breathtaking New Mexico landscape. Taos was established as an artists’ enclave in 1899 and remains so today. With art depicting the landscape and native scenes of New Mexico, there are now three revered art museums in Taos, including The Harwood Museum of Art, The Taos Museum of Art and The Millicent Rogers Museum. Add to that the 80-plus art galleries in town and you have a place that brings art aficionados from around the world. And with so many amazing eateries, shops and places to stay, Taos really is a one-of-a-kind destination that must be experienced.
Although Taos has enough to keep you busy for an entire vacation, the surrounding area is also filled with outdoor action and activities. Not far from town are the Taos mountains and valleys as well as the Rio Grande River, all of which offer action-packed adventure. Depending on their preferences, visitors can see the area on horseback or from above in a hot air balloon. Mountain bikers will appreciate the best trail in New Mexico at the South Boundary trail, just east of Taos. During the winter, Taos boasts four ski areas – Taos Ski Valley, Red River, Sipapu and Angel Fire, all with downhill and cross-country skiing as well as snowmobiling and ice skating. And because Taos is without major hotels and resorts, guests will appreciate the luxurious B&B’s and premium vacation rentals, all providing luxurious accommodations in the unique style and flair of Taos.
