Big Sur

Yes Sur!

Along the rugged California Coast is Big Sur, a strip of land that follows the scenic Highway 1 for 90 miles through San Luis Obispo and Monterey Counties. It is where the sea and land meet to create one of the most beautiful places in the world. The weather in Big Sur is always beautiful and is what’s to be expected in this part of the state. The summer sees warm sunny days where the cool fog rolls in in the late afternoon and fades away in the mid-morning. Winter is a mix of brilliantly sunny days and calm rainy days. Most of the Big Sur area is undeveloped, and that’s how it’s supposed to be. The confluence of the Coastal Range and Santa Lucia Mountains that quickly drop down into the pristine Pacific Ocean creates an incredibly beautiful explosion of natural beauty. A drive through Big Sur will take guests from the southern end in San Simeon to the north at Carmel-by-the-Sea. Along the way, visitors will have endless photo opportunity at one of the many pullovers where the giant redwoods give way to hidden beaches and rocky bluffs.

The best way to experience all of Big Sur is by taking a drive along the scenic Highway 1. Used in countless luxury car commercials due to its incredible beauty, this winding road hugs the coastline the entire way along cliffs that abruptly drop to the Pacific Ocean. Along the way, there are many areas to park your car, walk about and explore the sea and land. If you prefer to view the region on foot, choose from over 80 hiking trails of all skill levels beside beaches, through valleys, canyons and along rivers. While you are taking a walk along the beaches, keep your eyes open for jade, the deep-green, semi-precious stone that can be found around Big Sur. The beautiful landscape understandably attracts artists from all over, and with that come some great art galleries and studios that have a distinct focus on the natural beauty of Big Sur. And in keeping with the beauty of the region are lovely and quaint bed & breakfasts and inns. One place to stay is the Ragged Point Inn & Resort with 30 well-appointed guest rooms, a gourmet restaurant and everything you need to make your trip to Big Sur one to remember.

Private Aircraft Charter to Big Sur FAQ

What do I need to think about when chartering to Big Sur?

Big Sur is a wonderfully undeveloped place that requires guests flying in to use one of the airports at the north and south ends of the region. Monterey Regional Airport - MRY – is about 26-miles and an hour’s drive to Big Sur’s north side. The drive to Big Sur is along California’s beautiful Highway 1 that follows the beautiful rugged coastline the entire way. MRY is also ideal for visits to the communities of Monterey, Santa Cruz and Carmel-by-the-Sea. Guests starting their visit to Big Sur at its south end will find San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport – SBP – perfectly located. From SBP, guests can hop on Scenic Highway 1 for the beautiful hour-long drive to Big Sur’s southern end. SBP also provides easy access to San Luis Obispo County’s wine growing region and places like Pismo Beach, Paso Robles and northern Santa Barbara County.
