Thousand Oaks is a California city that sits about 35 miles north of Los Angeles, in the Conejo Valley portion of Ventura County. Named after the native oak trees that provide shade for much of the region, Thousand Oaks is a great place to visit as well as a useful starting point for visits to all Southern California. With Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego to the south and the Santa Barbara area to the north, visitors enjoy quick and easy access to all of Southern California’s attractions. Places to the south like Disneyland, Santa Monica beach and Hollywood are all just a short drive away. Just to the north, visitors can easily reach Santa Barbara wine country, Santa Ynez Valley and Soledad. Being set a bit inland from the coast, Thousand Oaks has a Mediterranean climate with moderate summers and calm, mild winters. Just outside of Thousand Oaks is the Santa Monica Mountains National Park, which has the unique distinction of containing both mountains and beaches. Whether guests are looking to hike mountain trails or walk along the pristine coastline, this park is a great place to visit. And for an evening in the wilderness, there are wonderful campsites available. If shopping is what you are looking for, Thousand Oaks has more than enough to satisfy. The Oaks Mall, The Lakes at Thousand Oaks and Janss Marketplace all have major retailers along with smaller shops, various dining options and movie theatres. While Thousand Oaks is not directly on the beach, Malibu Beach is only about a 25-minute drive away and is a perfect day trip to the coast. Malibu is also where the best lodging is for visitors to Thousand Oaks. Beachside resorts such as the Malibu Beach Inn and Calamigos Guest Ranch Beach Club both offer finely appointed rooms, excellent restaurants and exclusive beachfronts.
