Salt Lake City
Four seasons of fun
As the home of the 2002 Winter Olympics, it’s no wonder that Salt Lake City, UT is a hub for winter sports. However, Salt Lake City and the surrounding area has so much more, no matter the season. Salt Lake is a modern, cosmopolitan and exciting place with endless things to do year-round. Just about 30 miles from SLC and part of the Wasatch Back section of the Rocky Mountains is Park City. It was one of the main locations for the 2002 Olympics Winter Games and home to three world-class ski resorts and the Sundance Film Festival. The three resorts have some of the world’s best winter sports such as snowboarding, skiing and snowmobiling. In the summer, there is action as well, with an abundance of hiking, mountain biking, golfing and much more. In January, Park City hosts the Sundance Film Festival, which showcases independent films and where there are lots of chances to see new films and stars.
Salt Lake City is also an excellent starting point for the national parks and monuments of Utah. Locations like Zion National Park, Arches National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park are a drive away from SLC. As one of the largest cities in the region, SLC has whole lot to do and see. With amazing shopping, dining, entertainment and a rich history, Salt Lake City, is a destination in and of itself. Near downtown is the Hogel Zoo, which features over 800 animals over the beautiful 42-acre park. At the Living Planet Aquarium in nearby Draper, guests can check out 4,500 animals that represent over 550 aquatic species. There are aquatic animal encounters, educational presentations and continually updated exhibits throughout the year. Quite a few museums are in Downtown Salt Lake City, including the Natural History Museum of Utah, the Utah Museum of Fine Art and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.
Utah is also a regional performing arts center, and guests can enjoy a wide-range of shows from Ballet West, The Utah Symphony and the Salt Lake Acting Company. The Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center hosts shows from the Sundance Film Festival, Plan-B Theatre Company and Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation. No trip would be complete without some shopping, and Salt Lake City has a lot of retail therapy available. City Creek Center, Gateway Mall and 9th & 9th are all great places to shop. Each features galleries, eateries and amazing retail. The many small neighborhoods spread throughout Salt Lake City each has its own unique vibe and there are great cafés, boutiques and locally owned shops.
