Porterville

Gateway to the Southern Sierras

When visiting the Sequoia National Forest, Giant Sequoia National Monument and the Kings Canyon National Park, Porterville is the wonderful gateway to these natural attractions. Set at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and in the Central Valley of California, this quaint town has a lot to offer along with its access to nature. As a former stopping point for California’s Gold Prospectors, the downtown is both historical and charming with lovely boutiques, antique shops and restaurants. It is a lovely place to enjoy a leisurely lunch, browse the shops and meet the friendly locals. For some excitement in the evening, Eagle Mountain Casino is only about a 20-minute drive to the east of Porterville and has 24 hours of Las Vegas-style gaming, shows and dining. On the way to Eagle Mountain Casino guests can also stop at Lake Success. With a lovely little marina to set off for some fun on the water such as fishing, waterskiing and tubing, Lake Success is the perfect place to cool off during the summer.

While Porterville is a fine destination in itself, it is really the amazing natural attractions that the town acts as a starting point for that distinguished it. Revered for their Giant Sequoia trees, the nearby Sequoia National Forest and Kings Canyon National Park are both a short drive away. The giant sequoia is the largest tree in the world and it only grows along a narrow, 60-mile strip of land along the Sierra Nevada mountains. A must-see at the park is the General Sherman, which is the biggest living tree on Earth, by volume, and reaches an unbelievable 294 feet in the air. Along with the natural wonders at the parks, there are also some varied activities, including day hikes, caving, horseback riding and ranger-led tours and programs. If you happen to find yourself in Porterville in the spring, make sure to visit the Porterville Iris Festival, a celebration of the beautiful purple flower native to the town. The Iris Festival features a carnival with rides and games, performances and a famous chili cook-off. And when the day is done, retire at any of the comfortable hotels and B&B’s available in town, rounding out an amazing few days in this enjoyable destination.

Private Aircraft Charter to Porterville FAQ

What do I need to think about when chartering to Porterville?

Porterville Municipal Airport – PTV – serves the city of Porterville and the eastern portion of Tulare County. Porterville’s location at the Sierra Nevada Foothills make PTV airport the gateway to the southern Sierras. It is just outside of the town of Porterville and next to Highways 65 and 190. This gives visitors fast access to Sequoia National Forest and Sequoia National Park Lake Isabella. Depending on weather conditions, the drive to the Sequoias are between one and two hours. There is more than enough runway for all sizes of business jets and excellent ground handling facilities at PTV. A second option is available just 35 miles to the north at Visalia Municipal Airport – VIS. Perfect for guests also spending time in Fresno and the rest of the San Joaquin Valley. Visalia Municipal Airport, like PTV, has long runways and enough space to handle everything from small turboprops to long-range heavy jets.
