Durango

Where the American West Begins

Set along the Animas River in the southwestern part of Colorado is the wonderful mountain community of Durango. While Durango is largest city in the region, its population is only about 18,000 residents. This gives it the charm and character of a small town with an urban sophistication. The land around Durango is dynamic and varied from the jagged peaks of the San Juan Mountains reaching to more than 14,000 feet and down to red bluffs made of sandstone along the Animas River. Being amongst the Colorado mountains means that during every season there is an abundance of outdoor activities from skiing to white water rafting. Purgatory Resort sits at 10,822 feet and offers world-class winter sports with 91 runs served by 10 lifts. Durango’s summers brings with it top hiking, mountain biking and camping. Beyond the great outdoors, Durango is a lovely town, filled with great shopping, galleries and restaurants serving locally sourced ingredients. And Durango’s location makes it the perfect place to set off on adventures to the many attractions throughout the region Mesa Verde National Park and Vallecito Lake.

One of Durango’s most famous attractions is the Durango & Silverton Narrow-Gauge Railroad. Guests can hop aboard the classic steam-powered train’s five-hour journey though the gorgeous scenery of southwest Colorado. During the winter, there are seasonal holiday themed trains such as the Polar Express, the Christmas Tree Train and the New Year’s Day Brunch Train. Durango’s historic downtown is home to a wonderful collection of galleries, eateries and incredible retail. Boasting more than 500 stores in the area, guests can shop for everything from Native American jewelry and artwork to fine apparel and sporting goods. The lodging in Durango includes fine B&B’s, major brand hotels and independent inns. The General Palmer Hotel is a perfectly restored Victorian property located in downtown Durango that blends classic styling with modern comfort. The General Palmer Hotel features opulent rooms, a wonderful café and amazing mountain views.

Private Aircraft Charter to Durango FAQ

What do I need to think about when chartering to Durango?

Durango’s closest airport is Animas Airpark – 00C - which is just over six miles away and a 15-minute drive from downtown. While 00C can handle most classes of aircraft, because of its runway length, all but heavy jets can use the field. A little further out from town is Durango-La Plata County Airport – DRO. DRO is about 15 miles to the southeast of town and the gorgeous drive to town takes only about 25 minutes. At DRO, guests should have no problem getting in and out because the runway is long enough to accept all classes of jets. A third airport serving Durango is Four Corners Regional Airport – FMN – located just to the south in New Mexico. FMN is ideal for guests who will be visiting Durango as well as Northern New Mexico and the Four Corners area.
