Berkeley

The 1960's, All Over Again

Being a city that is often dwarfed by its neighbors of Oakland and San Francisco, Berkeley has an influence and presence that is far bigger than expected. Berkeley, and the eponymous university have a rich history in American civil rights and freedom of speech movements. This gives it a very young, liberal and progressive vibe. Bordered on three sides by neighboring communities and the San Francisco Bay on the fourth, Berkeley is a culturally diverse city with dynamic neighborhoods, a lively arts scene and very friendly people. Berkeley’s climate is ideal and sees warm summers and mild winters with just a bit of rain. And while the San Francisco Bay Area is chock-full of things to do and see, Berkeley can stand proudly as its own destination. With museums, parks and a downtown area that is a page ripped from the 1960’s, Berkeley will be a wonderful place to visit where you will be able to experience both new and old.

A great way to really see and understand Berkeley is to stroll through UC, Berkeley, downtown, and Telegraph Avenue, reliving the 1960’s hippie movement and the Summer of Love. Along this quirky strip are record stores, used book shops, off-the-wall cafes and young people reliving the bohemian lifestyle of the 1960s. For foodies, what is lovingly known as the “Gourmet Ghetto” is a stretch of gourmet eateries, art galleries and cafes in North Berkeley. A number of culinary-related events take place here, including tasting tours, wine walks and an organic farmers’ market. While many of the best hotels are over in San Francisco, Berkeley is lucky to have Fairmont Hotel’s Clairmont Club & Spa. This amazing property sits on 22 acres of perfectly maintained grounds that includes pools, tennis courts, whirlpool spas and a four-diamond rated restaurant. And although Oakland is next door and San Francisco is just across the bay, Berkeley has so much that all you need is right there.

Private Aircraft Charter to Berkeley FAQ

What do I need to think about when chartering to Berkeley?

Closest to Berkeley is Oakland International Airport – OAK - one of the major commercial airports for the Bay Area. OAK is about 14 miles from Berkeley, and depending on traffic, the drive takes 15-30 minutes. Although Oakland does have the crowds and traffic to be expected at a major airport, the ground handling facilities are set far away so access is still quite simple. OAK is close to Interstate 880 so there is easy access to all of the Bay Area including San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco – just across the Bay Bridge. A second option is available just 23-miles south of Berkeley at Hayward Executive Airport – HWD. As an exclusively general aviation airport, HWD has far less air and ground traffic for a more exclusive experience. What’s best is that both OAK and HWD have long runways, so there are no restrictions on the sizes and classes of jets that can use the airports. HYD’s airport is close to the San Mateo Bridge, which means that places like Palo Alto, Sunnyvale and the entire Tech Corridor are just across the bay.
