Sausalito

The Golden Gate's Quiet Side

Just a few miles from the northern end of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge is the beautiful and one-of-a-kind community of Sausalito. Built on the side of a hill in between the Marin headlands and the San Francisco Bay, Sausalito is a well-to-do artists’ community and an amazingly beautiful place to visit. With the San Francisco skyline and Mount Tamalpais as its backdrop, Sausalito is a hidden treasure. Being so small means that the best way to see it all is on foot. Along Bridgeway and Caledonia Streets, guests will find an amazing collection of galleries, working studios and fun shops. Although Sausalito is a small town, there are more than 70 restaurants serving everything from freshly caught seafood to fine dining establishments that stay true to the farm-to-table movement. One of Sausalito’s most popular places is along its piers where the famous houseboats are moored. This unique neighborhood is made up of floating homes that open their doors each September to tours and viewings.

Art lovers should visit during one of Sausalito’s Art Walks where local galleries open their doors to display locally created works. For a fun and interesting lesson about Sausalito’s nautical history, Sausalito Wooden Boat Tours takes guests along the waterfront and its former shipyards, wooden houseboats, art studios and the Wooden Boat Center. An excellent way to get out and see the area is to bike over the Golden Gate Bridge to San Francisco and take the Sausalito Ferry back. This allows guests to see the Golden Gate Bridge, enjoy San Francisco and see all of the bay in one afternoon. Being home to a working port, Sausalito gives visitors the opportunity to watch fishermen haul fresh seafood that they can enjoy the same evening at one of the seafood restaurants. Scoma’s Restaurant is right there and offers their famous ciopinno, the seafood-stew made famous in San Francisco. The lodging in Sausalito maintains the character of the town with independent B&B’s, quaint inns and lovely rentals. The Inn Above Tide offers romantic rooms with incredible bay views, teak furniture and fireplaces in every room.
