Northern Californias Valley of Vineyards
When one thinks of Sonoma, what comes to mind is sun-drenched vineyards, rustic wineries and world-renowned culinary scene. And while this is true, Sonoma is also a wonderful community with a bustling downtown that’s filled with things to do. The centerpiece of Downtown Sonoma is Mission San Francisco Solano, which is now a California State Park. Including a museum, visitors center and tours, Mission San Francisco Solano is a perfect place to spend a warm afternoon. Next to the mission is Sonoma Plaza, filled wine tasting, dining, galleries, shops and lodging, all in the style and luxury expected of Sonoma. Hand in hand with the wine culture in Sonoma are its culinary scene and eateries. Throughout the year, Sonoma is home to a large number of events centered around the amazing local culinary scene. Restaurant Week, The Sonoma Cheese Festival, The Gravenstein Apple Festival and The Cloverdale Citrus Fair are just a few of the culinary events that happen in Sonoma year-round.
It goes without saying that Sonoma County is the premier wine region in the United States. With over 425 wineries, there are wine tasting, tours and education to name just a few attractions. Guests can visit large-production wineries like Gallo and Jackson or small, family-run vineyards like Mounts Family Winery and Fritz Underground Winery. For some tunes in the evenings, check out the Santa Rosa Symphony or outdoor music events at the Green Music Center. While visitors certainly may enjoy the wine in Sonoma, they will also have some excellent opportunities to learn about it as well. The Napa Valley Wine Academy and Relish Culinary Adventures offer individual classes, tours and wine-tasting experiences.
When you’re done for the day, the lodging is of the highest order, with 5-star accommodations such as the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa with its natural underground hot springs. If you prefer something more intimate, the Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza is a boutique-style inn with nearly 25 tasting rooms within walking distance. One of the best things about your visit to Sonoma is that no matter what part of the county you check out, you will find that each part has its own distinct character and features. Although Sonoma is rightfully synonymous with food and wine culture, you will be sure to find much more to enjoy during your visit.
Guests visiting Sonoma County and Northern California’s Wine Country have two excellent airports ready to serve their flights to the region. Guests spending time in the northern Sonoma County communities of Santa Rosa, Healdsburg and Sebastopol can arrive at Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport – STS. North Sonoma County is filled with wineries that specialize in Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel and restaurants steeped in the farm-to-table movement. Gnoss Field Airport – DVO – is in the town of Novato at the southern end of Sonoma County. DVO is ideally located for a quick trip to San Francisco where guests can enjoy the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf and Union Square. DVO is next to Highway 101, so there is easy access to places like Sausalito, Tiburon and Napa County. As a smaller airport, DVO has relatively short runways so it is best for those arriving in turboprops and very light jets.
